Digitrax DCS52 Zephyr Express Address Programming of ESU LokSound or LokPilot Decoders

USING THE DCS52 MAIN BASE UNIT (NO PLUGGED IN THROTTLES)
------TEST YOUR LOCOMOTIVE FIRST!------
1) Power on the DCS52 by plugging the included power supply into the wall and into the back of the DCS52.
2) Place the locomotive on your "main" track connected to the "RAIL A" and "RAIL B" outupts on the back of the DCS52.
3) Selecting locomotive addresses is done by pressing the loco shaped button in the upper left corner, the "LOCO" button, the address digits by using the keypad, and the loco shaped button again. All new locomotives out of the box are set to address 3. The proceedure for this would be "LOCO-3-LOCO". You do not need to type the 0's. The system will fill these in and your display will show a large 0003.
4) Using the power button in the lower left corner, turn on track power and test the locomotive on address 3 first. Make sure all of the lights and sounds (if applicable), work properly (consult the locomotive instruction sheet for all light and sound functions). Push the direction control to Forward and turn up the throttle. Make sure the locomotive moves. Stop the loco and repeat in Reverse.
5) With everything operating properly, proceed to change the address. If something does not operate properly see the decoder reset instructions below.

First, note if you are setting a 4-Digit address or a 2-Digit address. The address is usually set to the cab number of the locomotive. If your cab number is between 1-127, you have a 2-Digit "short" address. If your cab number is between 128-9983, you have a 4-Digit "long" address. Once you have that determined, read the section below that applies to you. You only need to follow the steps for ONE of these proceedures, not both. You either have a 2-Digit address OR a 4-Digit address, not both.

If your cab number is between 9984-9999, you cannot program it or operate it on a Digitrax DCC system. While allowed under the DCC protocol, and operable by other DCC system brands, Digitrax does not recognize 9984-9999. You can still use your locomotive but you'll have to choose a different number to use for the address.

SETTING THE NEW 4-DIGIT ADDRESS (RANGE 128-9983)
1) Place the locomotive on your "program" track connected to the "PROG A" and "PROG B" outputs on the back of the DCS52. This has to be a SEPARATE track from your "main" track. They cannot be connected together or damage to your DCS52 may occur!
2) Press the Menu button in the upper right corner (with the three horizontal lines and the arrow pointing up).
3) Press 1 for Quick Decoder Setup.
4) Press the "A" key under the screen to READ. The DCS52 will read back data from the decoder. Your locomotive may or may not move slightly on the track during this process. Either is normal.
5) Once the DCS52 stops beeping and data appears, press 2 for AD4 LongAdr.
6) Press the "C" key under the screen for DATA.
7) Using the keypad, type in your desired 4 digit address. Note that 4-digit addresses are between, and inlcuding, 128 and 9983. Addresses 9984-9999 are not allowed when using a Digitrax DCC system. Addresses 1-127 are Short Addresses and must be programmed differently. See the steps below for programming a 2-Digit address.
8) Once you have typed in your desired 4-digit address, press the "B" key under the screen for WRITE.
9) Press the "C" key under the screen for SELECT.
10) Press the 0 key for Last Menu.
11) Press the "C" key under the screen for EXIT.
12) Press LOCO-(Your new address)-LOCO. (The LOCO button is loco shaped in the upper left corner).
13) Move the locomotive back to the "main" track connected to "RAIL A" and "RAIL B" and ensure that the TRACK STATUS light is illuminated. If it is not, press the power button in the lower left corner.
14) Your locomotive should now respond to the new address. Test lights, sound functions (if applicable), and movement. As a quick test, the headlight is the 0 key. If sound equipped the 2 key should blast the horn. If these things work, the address was set correctly.

SETTING THE NEW 2-DIGIT ADDRESS (RANGE 1-127)
5) Once the DCS52 stops beeping and data appears, press 1 for AD2 ShortAdr.
6) Press the "C" key under the screen for DATA.
7) Using the keypad, type in your desired 2 digit address. Note that 2-digit addresses are between, and inlcuding, 1 and 127. Addresses 128-9983 are Long Addresses and must be programmed differently. See the steps above for programming a 4-Digit address.
8) Once you have typed in your desired 2-digit address, press the "B" key under the screen for WRITE.

RESETTING THE DECODER TO FACTORY DEFAULTS
1) Place the locomotive on your "program" track connected to the "PROG A" and "PROG B" outputs on the back of the DCS52. This has to be a SEPARATE track from your "main" track. They cannot be connected together or damage to your DCS52 may occur!
